The most important preparation is to wash your horse thoroughly and clean any tack prior to your session. Small cuts and scrapes on your horse can easily be removed in photoshop, but mud, dirt or a dusty coat cannot!
Plaiting and hoof polish is optional but recommended for Fine Art sessions as it will provide an elegant, polished look. Neither are necessary for outdoor lifestyle photographs where the most important thing is the relationship and connection.
A comprehensive Client Guide that covers everything you need to know to get the most out of your session for you and your horse will be sent to you when you book.
Don’t worry we will still get lovely photos.
If your horse is high strung or spooky, it’s a good idea to do some groundwork in the days leading up to your session so that your horse will stand still by your side for just a few seconds at a time.
If your horse is stabled, riding, lunging or paddock exercise several hours before the session is also recommended.
Other than your horse and yourself, it is a really good idea to have a friend on hand to help get your horse’s attention especially to hold them if you are including more than one in your session.
A nice leather halter or clean show quality bridle is highly recommended for your horse’s portraits.
I allow time in my calendar each month in case the weather is bad and we need to reschedule your session.
Absolutely! I frequently photograph dogs (plus I have 5 border collies of my own) and also livestock such as cattle, sheep and goats for my private and commercial clients.
I have been a child and family portrait photographer for many years and continue to offer these services, particularly to rural and equestrian families where the main focus is their shared love of horses and equestrian activities.
No you don’t, but you certainly will want too when you see the beautiful photographs from your session.
Ready to frame prints start at $185, albums and collections range from $740 – $2495. Most clients budget for $650 to $3000 for a custom artwork and digital collection that perfectly suits their needs. Take home layby’s and credit card payments are available for your convenience.
This is the one question I get asked the most! The short answer is whatever you are comfortable wearing, however once you book your session I will send you my comprehensive client guides that contain everything you need to know about preparing for your session which includes What to Wear, styling advice and everything else you need to know so you get the most out of your session.
I will also go over all the details and answer any questions over the phone during your Planning Consultation before your session.
Believe it or not, the majority of my clients ask this question!
Of course you don’t ‘have’ to be in the photos, but I really encourage you to be in at least a few of them, after all, these photos are about your special relationship and the beautiful bond you share!
I have many years experience helping people to relax, have fun and look their best in front of the camera. I will gently guide you through the session and encourage interactions with your horse that are authentic and natural to you.

Outdoor Sessions: The most beautiful golden light occurs in the last 1.5 hours before sunset. This is known as the ‘golden hour’ and is when I prefer to schedule outdoor sessions. The light is also beautiful in the first 1.5 hours after sunrise.
Black Background – Natural light and portable studio light: Can be scheduled at any time if full shade from a shed, stable or covered arena is available
There is some flexibility in timing – depending on location and what you want your photographs to look like, please contact me to discuss other options.
